Jericoacoara is a small fishing village, as well as a beach Mecca for travellers, in Ceará. It is located west of Fortaleza. Jeri, as it is affectionately known, is a place where pavement does not exist and there is sand under every step. It is the kind of idyllic place where many travellers end up deciding to stay for longer than they had originally planned.
Tourist Offices
There is no actual tourist office but Dadinho Off-Road Travel Agency can be very helpful.
Sightseeing
The Jericoacoara beach is reputedly one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil. It is made of very fine grey sand, and is exceptionally wide and flat. Every evening you can find a crowd climbing the dunes to watch the sunset over the ocean. Because the land juts out northward into the ocean creating a westward-facing beach, Jeri is the only spot in Brazil where this can be done.
Getting there
There are no permanent roads in or out of Jericoacoara. It can be accessed only by dune buggy or four-wheel drive truck. Typical transportation from Fortaleza includes a 2-and-a-half hour minibus ride and subsequent transfer to the back of a pick-up for a really rough 1-hour ride. Good package deals including transportation, lodging, and a guided hike can easily be arranged in Fortaleza. It may be possible to arrange transportation from Belém as well.
Getting around
Jericoacoara is full of sandy pathways and everywhere can be reached by foot.
