This weather beaten town is very unique by nature. Almost the whole town is built from rusted corrugated iron and wood-tiled walls. It’s a sleepy town, where apparently even dogs are too lazy to move away from the road when a car passes by. There’s nothing much on the history of this town. It was basically founded at an important crossing point of a sprawling estuary, where shellfish are nurtured. Unlike a century ago, Maullin is no longer the gateway to Chiloé. But there are still ferries passing by the river as they did in those days.

Getting there
Getting here might seem a bit complicated. You have to drive south-west of Puerto Montt for more than 50 kilometres, and then take the next right-hand junction which leads another 25 kilometres west to this small town.
