Valdivia is a commune and city in southern Chile. It is located where the Calle-Calle, Valdivia and Cau-Cau Rivers join, approximately 15km east of the coastal town of Corral. The city was also the epicentre (and most damaged city) of the Great Chilean Earthquake of 1960 — the most powerful earthquake in recorded history. Debris and destroyed buildings from the earthquake can still be found in the suburban areas.

Tourist Offices
There is a Sernatur office next to the river, near Mercado Fluvial, on Prat 555 and there is another information office inside the indoor market, opposite Mercado Fluvial.

Around and closeby
During January and February there's a Feira at Niebla, on the coast. Seafood stalls and folk music and dancing carry on into the night. You'll find delicious empanadas de mariscos and other assado and seafood. Loads of food stalls and free entry provide a great evening of entertainment. Buses run to and from Valdivia and at closing there are several buses lined up to take people back to Valdivia.

Getting there
It is only a 3 hour ride from Puerto Montt by bus. There are twice daily, one-stop flights to and from Santiago. The airport is about 35km north of Valdivia. Numerous shuttles await the flights to take you into the city.
