Puerto Nariño is the second municipality of the Amazonas department of Colombia, located on the shore of the Amazon River. It has about 6,000 residents, most of them are indigenous and it is entirely pedestrian, no car or motorcycle being allowed, as an experiment in an ecological community. The traffic with the smaller communities along the river, and with Leticia, the only other Colombian municipality in the region, takes place by motorboats. Another unique thing about this town is that it only has electricity between sundown and 11pm. This and the lack of vehicles makes it an extremely quiet and peaceful place. It's also very tidy, with locals taking particular pride in the presentation of there houses and gardens, and they have a litter brigade that combs the town every morning.

Sightseeing
Visit the conservation project on the riverfront, the Fundación Omacha. Find out about the work they're doing to help save the manatees and dolphins of the Amazon. You can also pay a visit to the beautiful Lago Tarpoto, a ten kilometre boat ride on which, if you're lucky, you'll get to see some pink dolphins.

Getting there
The only way to reach Puerto Nariño is by boat from Leticia.
