With a population of a mere 300 people, this small hamlet doesn’t have much to offer, except for the Monasterio de las Candelaria. Located 7km beyond Ráquira, it is quite a historical place with the buildings and architecture dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. The monastery was founded in 1660 by Augustine, and only part of it is available for public viewing. You can walk around the chapel, the small museum, the library and the courtyard. The artworks here are very symbolic and they were apparently painted by Gregorio Vasquez de Arce y Ceballos and the Figueroa brothers.
Getting there
The town is easily accessible by bus. You can get the bus from Bogotá, there are two buses a day, or you can walk from Ráquira, which takes about an hour. Alternatively, you can also take a taxi from Villa de Leyva or Ráquira.
