Tunja is the capital of the Boyacá department. This historical Colombian city was founded on August 6, 1539 by the Spaniard captain Gonzalo Suarez Rendon in the domain of "El Zaque", one of the chiefs of the Muiscas tribe. Tunja now is considered a university city because one out of every five inhabitants is a student.

Sightseeing
Tunja hosts the Cold Festival during the month of October. This festival includes a beauty contest, and a typical Ruana fashion competition. The International Festival of Culture and Expressions, and one of the most famous celebrations named Aguinaldo Boyacense, bring the opportunity to enjoy a full week of festivities with musical events, culture and sport presentations. The International Festival of Culture is one of the biggest festivals in Colombia. During this festival you can enjoy the theatre, story telling, dancing groups, and many other cultural expressions. The city is historically rich and teeming with Catholic churches and old buildings.
Getting there
There are regular buses from Bogotá, Villa de Leyva and Bucaramanga.
