Parque Nacional Tayrona is one of Colombia’s most popular national parks, and it is located on the forested coast, at the foot of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. The park is quite big, stretching from the Bahía de Taganga near Santa Marta to the mouth of the Río Piedras, which is some 35km to the east. The biggest attraction in this park is the beach, which is beautifully set in deep, hidden bays and shaded by coconut palms. It is claimed to be one of the most beautiful beaches in this region and, with the coral reefs close by, the popularity of the place goes without saying.

Around and closeby
Once ruled by the Tayrona Indians, today only the archaeological remains of that time are found here. The Pre-Hispanic town of Pueblito is not too far from the park and you can find some interesting historic ruins there called Chairama.

Sightseeing
There are so many things to see here, ranging from sandy beaches to rainforests and brown hills with xerophyte plant species to wetlands with various wild animals. Most of the lowland areas get very wet during the rainy season in May to June and September to November.
