This reserve is not very big, about 42sq km, but it does have some rugged, forested lands with great views. It was opened in 1984, just outside the boundaries of the Parque Nacional Los Nevados. It is located around the middle course of the Río Otún, some 30km south-east of Periera.

Sightseeing
The park is worth a visit for its ecological paths and excursions. The ecological paths go through beautiful, green hills where you can see the wealth of the park's vegetation and animal life. The most common animals here are birds. So far, about 185 different species have been spotted. Excursions include a trip up the Río Otún, which leads through a gorge to Parque Nacional Los Nevados. You can also choose to go uphill to the Laguna del Otún, a journey which takes about eight hours. After reaching the Laguna you can stay there and camp overnight before making the return trip. You'll have more chances to explore by going on side excursions up in the paramo. If you need a guide, you can arrange one at the reserve. They also rent out mules and horses. Check the safety conditions before you arrive as there has been some guerrilla activity here in the past.
