Atenas is a very small village with some nice views, especially during spring time. It is located on the historic 'Camino de Carretas' or oxcart trail, which once carried coffee beans to many places, including Puntarenas. Having such nice views and the most pleasant climate in the world makes this place very popular indeed, it even appeared on a National Geographic magazine several years ago! You can get here easily by frequent buses from San José and Alajuela.
