Located some 19km north-west of Turrialba, this monument is the important and largest archaeological site in the country. There are some great things to see, especially the sophisticated infrastructure and mysterious petroglyphs. If you want more you can also see them at the Museo Nacional in San José, and there you can also find the polychromatic pottery and gold artefacts discovered here. The most notable structure here is the aqueduct system. The huge stones brought in from Rio Reventazon are still doing well today, and worth visiting. Besides the historical buildings, this site is also very famous for wildlife watching, especially mammals like squirrels, armadillos, and some birds as well.

History and Culture
This place was very famous around 3000 years ago, but was then abandoned just like that. The Spanish who came later didn’t find anything here. Only about 40 years ago the excavations began here, and traces of the site were discovered. It became a national monument, and until today the excavations are still going on.
