This town was an important centre for the country’s coffee fincas, but nowadays the focus has changed to something else; handicrafts. Once upon a time the most common site was workers carrying sacks of ruby-red fruit into the town, from the hills, to be processed at the plants. These famous beans were then shipped to cafés all around America and Europe.
This town is located some 6km north-east of San José, and is now famous for handicrafts like leather, ceramics, jewellery and wood products. Most people come here for day visits, and before leaving, it has become a tradition to buy a souvenir.
