Think of thick forests, beautiful waterfalls, fast-flowing rivers and huge deep canyons; you are thinking of Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo. This natural park has not been explored properly, despite the fact that it is located merely 30 minutes north of San José. This park has multiple levels of altitudes, which means there are multiple levels of biodiversity as well. A very unique thing here is the camp sites on top of Volcán Barva, among the misty cloud forests.

History and Culture
It was once the only link for the railway route from San José to Puerto Limón, but 30 years ago a highway was built across the country instead. Eventually this plan, which was to destroy the forests, was changed to compromise with the need of preserving the greens. This compromise was very historical. It was designated as a national park, and was named after the third president of the country. The 48,000 hectare park was globally recognized and almost everything in it went under the protected territories, including the forests which are the primary watershed of San José.
