Created 15 years ago to protect the slopes of Volcán Platanar and Volcán Porvenir from logging, this national park is very important to the country. It is not just a normal national park, but this is where five major rivers of the country originate, and it is the most important watershed as well. Owned by some plantation families, this park is not fully open to the public. Only those areas bought by the government are open to you. You can camp or use the park for day use. You are supposed to pay a certain amount of fees to the Minae office in El Sucre, right next to the entrance, but most of the time the office is closed, so don’t worry to much about it, just use the park properly and legally. Since there are five rivers here, it is no doubt that this place is a haven for fish anglers. But many of the areas are closed, due to the fact that they are difficult to access. You can sometimes see wildlife around too. If you think you can’t handle things alone, you should hire a guide to come along. You can find them at the hotels in the area.
