This national park is located some 50km south-east of Puntarenas by secondary road or 90km west of San José by the Orotina highway. It is 5242 hectares in size, and it is located at the mouth of the Rio Tarcoles. Despite the average size of the park, it is very important to the country. It is in fact the meeting point between the dry tropical forests and wet rain forests. This means you can see both types of trees in one single place! Besides that, this park is also important as an agricultural and archaeological place. If you decide to visit the archaeological sites particularly, just hire a guide, and you will get to see indigenous burial sites and traces of the Huetar group civilization. Keep in mind that it’s pretty small and not many people lived here, so don’t expect huge tombs like in Mexico!

Sightseeing
The park is known for its various species of bird, such as the scarlet macaw, ant birds, parrots, trogons, manikins, herons, and so on. Don’t miss out the animals such as monkeys and deer too. There are two seasons here in this park; dry and wet, and you can see these animals during both times fairly well. Last but not least, you must also visit the Crocodile Bridge, where you can find lots of basking crocodiles.
