When you’re travelling and you need a quiet place to stop and rest, you’ll find that Upala meets your needs better than most other cities. Upala is connected to the Interamericana via Highway 6 and to La Fortuna and Laguna de Arenal via Highway 4. If you’re planning on using Upala as a stopping point you should do it via Highway 6, since Highway 4 is riddled with potholes, but if you’re on your way to Los Chiles or Nicaragua, you’ll have to brave the undeveloped highway sometime, and there’s no better place than Upala to recover from the ordeal before crossing the border. Upala is the Costa Rican centre for cattle and rice, so you’ll find plenty of good food, great company in businessmen and, with the Nicaraguan border so close, you’ll also enjoy excellent music over the radio waves.
