With its wide, open spaces spanning 18,417 hectares and hordes of wildlife, Parque Nacional Palo Verde is the ultimate place for any nature lover to make a stop. Palo Verde is a paradise, harbouring four different ecosystems and their inhabitants. The park is home to more than three-hundred different bird species, including rare black-crowned night herons, spoonbills and a variety of forest birds. But not only birds live in this strange and beautiful montage of nature, Palo Verde is also home to dozens of mammals and reptiles, including coatis, monkeys, jaguarondi and crocodiles reaching up to 5 metres in length. For any nature fanatic seeking refuge from the scourge of everyday life, Palo Verde is the perfect place to spend a day, especially during the dry months, December to March, when the bare trees unveil the flocks of birds that nest in their branches and the forest animals gather daily around the waterhole. Whether you are taking a day tour or spending a night under the stars with the animals, Palo Verde is the best place to enjoy nature at its most undisturbed.
Getting there
From Bagaces you drive down the main road, off the Interamericana, follow the well-beaten path to Cerro Guayacán and finally the main entrance of Palo Verde.
