If you’re looking for the perfect place to express your true tree-hugger feelings, as well as a place to use your 4WD, the Reserva Biológica Lomas de Barbudal is the place for you. The 2646-hectare reserve is home to several species of endangered trees—most of which are deciduous—like mahogany, rosewood and corteza amarilla, a species of tree whose buds all bloom on the same day, bombarding the surrounding forest and wildlife with bright splashes of yellow. During the wet season these trees provide an eerie shade for passersby, keeping out most of the warm sunlight overhead, but in dry months the leaves give way and sunlight rushes through to create the lavish plant life that covers the ground, making it soft to walk on. The road at Lomas de Barbudal remains unpaved and is the perfect trail for 4WD adventures, especially in the rainy season. However, a car may also be necessary for some visitors who have an insect problem since Lomas de Barbudal is home to more than 250 species of bee alone—not the ideal vacation spot for someone with bee allergies—and only 200 species of bird to clear the area. But Lomas de Barbudal is not only home to bees—the reserve is also called home by king vultures, scarlet macaws, butterflies, moths and other insects and birds that can be a real treat for the eyes and the ears.
