Although the name means “bad country” you shouldn’t shy away from Mal Pais if you’re looking for lots of water activities and great seafood. In the south-west corner of Nicoya, you could probably get there on foot if you’re not bringing a lot of stuff or you can drive along the road from Cóbano until you reach Frank’s Place and then take a left. Buy a cheap surfboard and hit the waves on Playa Manzanillo, Playa Santa Maria and Playa El Carmen. You’ll find seafood and housing accommodations perfectly fit for a surfer, but not for those seeking authentic Costa Rican experiences.
