Some of the most magnificent wildlife in Costa Rica can be found in the unspoiled rainforests of the Nosara area. The region also boasts beautiful beaches, but it is the luxuriant vegetation which attracts birds and wildlife that make this such an attractive area to visit. There is little logging or development, partly because of the nearby wildlife refuge and partly because of real estate development, which has driven land prices through the roof. There is a group of foreigners, mainly North Americans, living in what some describe as "sophisticated jungle living" and these semi retired people are vocal about protecting the rainforests.
Tourist Offices
There is no ATM in Nosara but the supermarket (Super Nosara) southwest of the soccer field will change $US and travellers checks.
Around and closeby
If you're after something a bit more health related, the famous Nosara yoga Institute is in the hills near Playa Guoines and has regular classes, week-long workshops, instructor training and offers massages!
Sightseeing
Nosara is a unique destination and you can often see parrots, toucans, armadillos and monkeys just a few feet from the beaches, of which there are three separate ones. Playa Nosara to the north is difficult to access and is mainly used by fishermen. Heading south is Playa Pelada, a small crescent-shaped beach with an amazing blowhole that sends water shooting through the air at high tide. Still heading south, you'll find Playa Guiones, with a long, sandy stretch of beach which is regarded as one of the best spots on the central peninsula.
Getting there
Both Sansa and NatureAir operate three daily flights to and from San José for around $US80 each way. The Nicoya bus departs at 5am, 7am, 12.25pm, and 3pm, while the Alfaro buses to San José depart from the pharmacy by the soccer field at 12.30pm.
Getting around
As the beaches are strung out along the coastline you really need a vehicle to get around. If you need to get around by bus, they depart from the soccer field in Nosara. For a small fee any of the buses will drop you off at the beach.
