Playa Avellanas and Playa Negra, with some of the most consistent waves in the area, provide some of the best surfing along the coastline.

On the road into Avellanas you’ll find a pleasant hotel with lovely bungalows and a restaurant near the beach. You can also hire kayaks and surfing gear. Lola’s on the Beach is also good with great food, but unless you’re really on a shoestring, avoid the cheapies!

Dangers and Annoyances
Don’t leave anything in your vehicle while at the beach. Professional thieves will smash your window and grab anything.

Getting there
The beaches begin 15km south of Tamarindo and are reached via a poor dirt road. You will need a 4x4 to gain access most of the year.
