For a truly authentic Costa Rican experience outdoors, without the frills of developed and Americanized surroundings, you should check out the shoreline and beaches of Corcovado. With its 10km shoreline and trails covering every inch, you’ll never be lost looking for somewhere to hike. There are also hiking trails that move further inland, giving you excellent opportunities for bird watching and wildlife watching—you just might see some toucans and kinkajou—and the famous Río Claro trail will take you over to Punta Río Claro Wildlife Refuge, where you’ll have an even easier time spotting the wildlife you’ve been dying to see. But don’t forget to take time to enjoy the beaches at Corcovado and all they have to offer. The area is uninhabited by locals and undeveloped because most tourists find other places to spend their time, but you can do any water sport here from surfing to kiteboarding to swimming.
