If you love the sea, all of the fish, the marine mammals and the wonders that it holds, you should schedule some time on your visit to Costa Rica to take in the sights at the Reserva Biologica Isla Del Caño. The reserve is part of Bahía Drake, so it is easily accessible along the shoreline of Corcovado. Del Caño, however, is an island reserve, so you’ll need to take a boat or a kayak—always in heavy supply—to get to it. The reserve is made up of an island that is only 326 hectares but is surrounded by 2700 marine hectares of protected ocean. The reserve is home to some of the most unique under water rock formations known to man and has become famous for its natural beauty. But beware, there are no facilities and no overnight stays.
Sightseeing
The reserve offers a wide variety of excellent activities and sight seeing, including fish and marine mammal watching, you can see whales, dolphins and dozens of fish, since they happily swim very close to the shore where they will not be in danger. The shallow waters are excellent for snorkel discoveries like the Giant Conch and Coral, deeper water is great for divers wanting a good look at the odd rock formations, and hiking trails that lead deep into evergreen forests provide excellent wildlife watching opportunities.
