In striking contrast to the highly developed north, the southern shore of the Golfo Dulce is virtually isolated. But it still attracts surfers chasing the country's longest left-hand break at Pavones or the tranquil waters at Zancudo.
Apart from the surfers who came to visit and staying, this region is home to a large indigenous population who live on the Reserva Indigena Guaymi de Conte Burica near Pavones.
Zancudo is a tiny town that jutts into the Golfo Dulce, 15km south of Golfito. On the west side, the warm waves of the Pacific gently lap the black sands, attracting swimmers, sunbathers and surfers.
On the eastern side, mangrove swamps house crocodiles, birds, and plenty of fish. It is a popular holiday spot for Ticos, especially around New Year and during the annual Fishing & Blues Festival held in early February.
Dangers and Annoyances
When the wave is big it can dump surfers on the sharp rocks at the far end of the bay.
Around and closeby
About 15km south of Zancudo you'll find Pavones, which is renowned among surfers for its long left-hand break. The best conditions are usually between April and October, but because it is inside Golfo Dulce, Pavones is protected from many swells, so you can wait weeks for some decent waves
Getting there
You will find the boat dock near the north beach on the inland, estuary side. A water taxi goes to Golfito at 7am, returning at noon, Monday through Saturday. A bus to Neily departs from the pulperia near the dock at 5.30am, while the bus for Golfito departs at 5am for the three hour trip, with a ferry transfer at the Rio Coto Colorado.
Getting around
The best surfing is in the rainy season which plays havoc with the roads, so if you’re driving you will need a 4x4.
