If you’re on your way to climb the illustrious and famed Ilinizas, you will find yourself passing through El Chaupi, just 7 kilometres off the Panamericana. You’ll start at Machachi and either drive the 14 kilometres or you can take the blue line bus. El Chaupi isn’t much to look at but has a telephone and a store (with limited supplies). There are several hotels catering to backpackers and climbers, some with well-stocked guest kitchens. Since this is primarily a resting ground for climbers and adventurers, you won’t find much to do if you’re not doing the same.
