The small village of Guamote lies 47km south of Riobamba. Guamote is famous for hosting the largest rural market in Ecuador. It is known as the Thursday Market and to get the real feel of it, you need to camp in Guamote the night before, when people and vendors start to pour in. There are a few small hotels offering basic services and nice, cosy rooms, as well as guided tours that include horseback riding and mountain biking.
