If your trip to Ecuador is solely to see active and extinct volcanoes, or you’re a little bit curious anyway, you should make time to visit the Laguna Quilotoa, just 14 kilometres north of Zumbahua. Laguna Quilotoa is a lake located 400 metres down from the rim inside a large—and extinct—volcanic crater. If you’re looking for a great hike you can go all the way around the rim or hike down to the lake—it’s alkaline and there are no inlets or outlets, so unless you’re looking for an out of body experience, don’t drink the water! There are some good hotels nearby with excellent almuerzos to eat.
