If you’re looking for great food but want to be able to cook it yourself, you should stop in Machachi on a Sunday—and make sure that you have the whole day to spend there. It’s just 35 kilometres south of Quito and has a mineral water bottling plant that finances the community. At the market you can buy fresh meat, seafood, veggies and fruits. At the bottling plant, you’ll be able to dip into an ice cold swimming pool. There are a few hotels and restaurants and buses run from Villaflora and Aloasi almost hourly.
