When you’re in Ecuador and looking for a great view of the volcanoes and remote areas that are highly inaccessible, there’s no better place to go than the Parque Nacional Sangay. Sangay is known for its highly inaccessible and remote areas and is located just 70 kilometres south-east of Bañas—you’ll know you’re near when there’s suddenly no people or houses. The park stretches over 517,765 hectares and is backed the beautiful and nearly as inaccessible Cordillera Oriental, which works in perfect unison with the three major volcanoes—Volcán Tungurahua, Volcán El Altar, and Volcán Sangay to create a diverse and beautiful landscape for visitors who dare to traverse its paths. You can get to any of the major trailheads for the park by bus or on foot and there’s more than just scenery to make you glad that you did. All over the park you’ll find yourself face to face with Andean spectacled bears, porcupines, tapirs—Baird’s and Andean ocelots, among hundreds of other species of mammals and birds.
