Lago Agrio is the capital city of Sucumbíos, in Ecuador. It is located in central Sucumbíos, in the Amazonian forest, and is one of the most important cities in north-eastern Ecuador. Its importance comes from the oil extraction. It is named after Loja as many of the first colonizers came from the Southern Province of Loja.
History and Culture
The area around the city has many ecological problems. The rainforest has been all but obliterated in this region and environmental degradation is severe, with catastrophic oil pollution in some areas. The town is quite sleazy, with seedy bars and prostitutes all over. It's not a great place for tourists but if you do go there then you should watch yourself and mind your own business. It's also dangerous because of it's proximity to Colombia.
Getting there
There are flights available from Quito but they fill up fast so book early. You can travel here by bus from Quito, Guayaquil, Tena, Puyo, Ambato, Riobamba, Cuenca and Machala. It's best to try and do the journey during the day as the scenery should not be missed.
