A perfect place to get to know the heritage of Ecuador and do some sight-seeing is the small town of Macas. It is the capital of Morona-Santiago, a region that is nearly half indigenous and half colonial. The locals in Macas are approachable and at ease, much resembling the very nature of the town itself. There are several places to stay and eat, and you'll get an excellent view of Volcán Sangay, around 40 kilometres to the north-west. You can also visit the local church and the cultural museum.
