The huge 205,249 hectare Parque Nacional Sumaco-Galeras is one of the most remote and unexplored areas in the country. It consists of thick rain forest, hidden caves, and cliffs. The main focus of this park is the Volcán Sumaco, towering at a height of 3732m. The weather here is always wet, although it is still accessible for climbing, a journey which takes about five or six days one-way. The volcano, which is believed to be dormant, is located some 27km north of the Coca-Tena road.
Sightseeing
One notable thing in the park is the roadside stands, which are all along the roads selling dried oyster mushroom harvested from the area. Do stop by, and you will find it very nice to talk to the locals, especially about their new agro-forestry industry.
Getting there
You need to start off from the village of Huamani, which is located 20km east of the Tena-Baeza road. Here, you can hire local guides to bring you up the mountain, guides are a necessity. During rainy season, which is from May to August, this park is practically inaccessible due to water logging. It is not developed from a tourist's standpoint, so there are hardly any facilities available. Bring your own camping gear and food.
