This reserve is very unique, and well worth visiting. Jatun Sacha in Quechua means ‘big forest’, which clearly explains the physical characteristics of this place. This reserve has an abundance of biodiversity, ranging from 850 butterfly species to 535 bird species and tonnes of interesting fungi. Located on the south side of Río Napo, some 23km east of Puerto Napo, it is run by an Ecuadorian nonprofit organization, with the intention of preserving and promoting forest research, conservation, and education. The reserve is currently 2,500 hectares in size but the neighbouring areas, which are all being swept away due to logging and agriculture, do not guarantee that it will remain this size in the future. There is no guarantee for the future of the plant and animal life either. You can choose to volunteer here, although you have to pay quite a lot to stay here for one month, and you can take part in the organization’s other efforts, such as reforestation and agro-forestry.
