With a population of 16,670, this town is one of the most important in the region. It provides the connection between humans and nature, through the natural sights as well as the activities hosted here. This town is noted for white-water rafting and other river-related activities such as kayaking. If you are not into such things, there are other activities to indulge in. The atmosphere here is very nice and friendly, and good for tourism. If you come here on November 15, the anniversary day of Tena’s foundation, you will see the festive side of the town, with live music and community events taking place all week.

Around and closeby
Volcán Sumaco is located 50km away. This is a bit far, but if you get a chance, do visit it.

Sightseeing
Arrange to go on a really exciting rafting and kayaking trip in this area to get your adrenalin pumping, or you can float gently down the river on a sightseeing trip. There are interesting tours of the stunning waterfalls and menacing caves surrounding town. Walk over the bridge to the small island that is home to the Parque Amazónico. Follow the trail around and see the animal enclosures, the range of plants that are labelled and head over to the small beach where you can take a swim.

Getting there
Buses are always available from Quito, Coca, and many other surrounding towns and villages. Buses normally don't stop during the 6 hours from Quito, so make sure you don't drink too much before your travel.
