If you’re looking for a unique experience while you’re staying in Ecuador, you might consider a brief trip over to El Bosque Petrificado Puyango. Puyango is located 55 kilometres inland, in a valley about 360 metres above sea level. Puyango is the largest Petrified Forest in Ecuador—it covers 2659 land hectares—and is home to thousands of fossilized trees that are millions of years old and can be as large as 1.6 metres in diameter. Most, if not all, of the trees at Puyango are Araucaria trees, which grow up to 11 metres in height. Puyango is also home to more than 130 species of bird.
