If you're driving across the Peruvian border, either to Ecuador or to Peru, you can take the convenient route through Huaquillas, or you can take the road less travelled, that goes through Macara. Conveniently located just 3 kilometres south of the Peruvian border on the Ecuador side, Macara is surrounded by lush green scenery that you don't get on the coastal route. However, unless you're into dusty towns and accommodations, or you're looking for a good hammock, there's no reason to stop in Macara—shop owners lay in hammocks all day, hotels are run down and menus are pricey.
