Zamora is a city in south-eastern Ecuador, capital of the Zamora-Chinchipe province. It is located in the foothills of the Andes mountains at 970 metres above sea level. Zamora has experienced a boom in growth during recent years, attributed to the discovery of gold in the surrounding region. It has been known as the mining capital of Ecuador as well as the "City of Birds and Waterfalls", referring to the constant presence of various types of birds and several waterfalls which emerged from the streams that surround the city.
Tourist Offices
There is a tourist information office on the corner of Avenida Heroes de Paquisha and Diego de Vaca, next to the market.
Sightseeing
The Parque Nacional Podocarpus is an interesting place to visit, although you're more likely to spot animals at the Refugio Ecológico Tzanka, a rescue centre. There is also an indoor market in town but it doesn't really have anything of much interest.
Getting there
There are regular buses to Loja, Gualaquiza, Cuenca, Quito and Guayaquil.
