La Unión doesn't attract a lot of tourists, unless they are just passing through and heading on to the beaches just to the south. The town is surrounded by market stalls that are chaotic at best. At night it is quite a sleazy and menacing place, not the sort of place you want to be hanging around.

Around and closeby
Conchagua is a nice little village to visit that's not very far away. It takes its name from the huge volcano that it is built on.

Sightseeing
Every weekend there is a cruise that goes around the islands of the Golfo de Fonseca. Food and lots of drink are available on the boat and there's also a dreadful karaoke machine. It's extremely tacky but there's no denying that it's a great way to see the islands, the views are fantastic. There are some fairly decent beaches just south-west of La Unión, during the week they're usually deserted. These include Playa El Tamarindo, Playa Las Tunas and Playa El Cuco, among others.

Getting there
You can reach La Unión by bus from Conchagua, El Amatillo, El Embarcader, El Tamarindo, Playa Jagüey, Intipucá, San Miguel, Santa Rosa de Lima, Playa Las Tunas and San Salvador. There are also regular passenger ferries to Isla Zacatillo and Isla Meanguera.
