If you’re looking for a great hike to find some excellent views, you should head on over to La Montañona. You can get here by taking a bus from Chalatenango and then hiking up the last hill to the town, 1600m above sea level, or by driving—you’ll need a 4WD to do this steep and rocky road. You’ll have an excellent view of the El Salvadorian countryside and the Pre-Columbian rock carvings, and you may even be able to tune in to the local guerrilla radio station. There’s one cabin for accommodation, a local lady that cooks up meals and a local gentleman that escorts tourists.
