If you want to experience the best El Salvador has to offer then head to Suchitoto. This town looks as if it should be in Louisiana, USA, rather than El Salvador, with its quaint old streets lined with beautiful colonial buildings. The festivals and parties here are something not to be missed.
Sightseeing
Suchitoto is the perfect place to visit when you want to get your groove on, especially if you're interested in art and food. Every weekend the little town holds an art and food festival and you're invited. In February the people host a world-class arts and culture festival, bringing in participants and visitors from all over the world—it just may rival the Fesitvale Internationale in Lafayette, Louisiana. Suchitoto also overlooks the Lago de Suchitlán, a lake area that is home to more than 200 species of migratory birds and is the perfect place to take one of the areas popular boat rides. You'll also have an amazing view of the Volcán Guazapa and have the opportunity to see a live outdoor play, a film screening, take an arts class or use the digital media resource centre.
Getting there
Just 47km north of San Salvador, you can get there by bus from Chalatenango, by boat across the San Salvador reservoir, or car through Aguilares.
