Apaneca is located some 1450m above sea level, making it the second-highest town in the country. It is nicely set on the Sierra Apaneca Ilamatepec, which gives the whole place a unique beauty and the cool climate makes things even better. This town doesn’t offer much to tourists but there are still some attractions, most of them being outdoor activities. If you’re just looking for a small town to hang out in, without many disturbances, then this place is just right for you.
Around and closeby
Laguna Verde is a deep cold crater lake, located 4km north-east of town. It’s a nice place to visit but getting up there is quite difficult unless you have a 4WD. Unfortunately it's not safe to swim in the lake due to its whirlpools. Laguna de las Ninfas is worth visiting too. From here there are some great views of Apaneca and the surrounding area. Chicicastepeque is the 1816m high mountain in the south. There’s no big forest to explore here, but it does offer some nice views.
Getting there
This town is easily accessible by bus, especially those travelling to and from Ataco, Ahuachapán and Juayúa.
Getting around
To reach most of the tourist spots mentioned you will need a vehicle, preferably a 4WD.
