This beautiful colonial town is quite famous among tourists, especially for its various sites, although it's not as popular as the other towns in this part of the country. Ataco is notable for the brightly painted homes, cobblestone streets, and the indigenous culture of the region. The town is not very open to tourists, although this trend is slowly changing.
Around and closeby
Salto de Chacala is the 50 metre waterfall on the Río Matala that is worth visiting. You can hire a good guide to bring you here. Chorros del Limo is another place worth visiting. It is an upwelling of water that forms a huge pool. The water is cold, but nice for swimming.
Sightseeing
Cruz del Chico is the place where the “Día de la Cruces” (Day of the Crosses) was held. But nowadays this event has been moved to Cruz Cielito Lindo, due to the lack of popularity. The latter is nearer to the town centre which allows more visitors to enjoy the events without travelling too far.
Getting there
You can easily get buses to and from Ahuachapán, Apaneca, and Sonsonate. The bus journeys are generally one hour or shorter. There is also a microbus service to and from Ahuachapán and Apaneca.
