Tazumal is a Pre-Columbian Maya archaeological site in Chalchuapa. Tazumal means "place where the victims were burned" in Quiché. It's located in the heart of Chalchuapa, 15km from the capital. In particular, the Tazumal includes a series of ruins that were the scene of an important and sophisticated Mayan establishment that existed around the years 100-1200BC. The rest includes systems of drainage as well as tombs, pyramids, palaces and objects.

History and Culture
The ruins of Tazumal are considered the most important and best preserved in the country. The artefacts found at Tazumal provide evidence of ancient and active trade between Tazumal and places as far away as Panama and Mexico. The excavated ruins are part of an area covering 10sq km, much of it buried under the town.
