Cancuén is an archaeological site of the Pre-Columbian Mayan civilization. The city is notable for having one of the largest palaces in the Mayan world. It was a major trade centre, specializing in jade, pyrite and obsidian. The palace covered nearly 23,000 square metres and contained 200 rooms. The city had a ball court and a large marketplace. It is now thought to cover at least 5 square kilometres.

Getting there
It is possible to travel here from La Isla but an easier option is go from Raxrujá. The pick-ups leave approximately every hour, they will take you to La Unión and from there you can catch a boat for the 30 minute ride along the Río de la Pasión to the site.
