Chisec is 60km north of Cobán. There is nothing very remarkable about the town but it is growing very fast with lots of people recently moving into the area. There is a huge plaza in the centre but there is no church. It's one of the few places in Guatemala not to have a church.
Around and closeby
There are two sites here that you must visit. The Bombil Pek is 2km north of town, buses going north on the highway pass the guide office every hour. Pay the small entrance fee and then a guide will lead you on a 40 minute hike through forests and meadows, and then down the staircase into the 50-metre-high cave. You can also squeeze through the small hole at the back, into a smaller cave, and see the ancient paintings on the walls. The Lagunas Sepalau are 9km west of town, there are pick-ups running all day and there is also a bus at 11am. You'll get dropped off at the entrance and a guide will take you to the three turquoise lakes that make up the Lagunas Sepalau.
Getting there
There are buses from Cobán every 30 minutes. There are also hourly buses from Raxrujá via Candelaria.
