Lying at the bottom of a deep valley is the village of Culbulco, surrounded on all sides by steep mountains covered in lush vegetation. The population of this isolated town is made up of Ladinos and Achi Maya.
Sightseeing
The main reason to come here is that it is one of the few places left where you can still see the Palo Volador. During festival celebrations on the 25th July the local men practice an ancient ritual, they throw themselves from a 30-metre-high pole with just a vine rope tied to there ankles to break their fall. Every bit as dangerous as it sounds and made even more so by the fact that the men all get completely drunk before they start. There is the occasional fatality but not nearly as many as you’d imagine. It really is something you must witness if you’re in the vicinity at the time. Be sure to try some of the local chilate drink too. It’s made from lots of different spices and corn mixed up together in a husk.
