The town of Panzós has a rather horrific past. The largest town in the Polochic valley, it is edged by swampy ground that is teeming with birds and alligators. In 1978, under orders from General Lucas García, a hundred men, women and children were shot as they came to demonstrate over the land disputes. Unbelievably, mass graves had already been dug for the protesters, who were killed upon arrival, making Panzós the site of one of the most brutal massacres in Guatemala’s violent history.
