Rabinal is a small town located in the department of Baja Verapaz. The town of Rabinal boasts a large, colonial-era baroque church. Various pre-Hispanic archaeological sites are also located in the surrounding hills. One of which, the ruins of the city of Cerro Cayup, is about ninety minutes walk away from town to the north-west.
Sightseeing
The town's annual Fiesta Patronal takes place in late January each year and is famous for its dances, including one that recreates a legendary battle between the Achi and the K'iche Maya. If you miss the fiesta then try and make sure that you're around for the Sunday market. Pick up some traditional pottery or a carving from the calabash tree.
Getting there
There are buses every hour between Rabinal and Salamá. There are five daily buses from Guatemala City via La Cumbre and three daily via El Chol and Granados.
