Raxrujá is a scruffy old town, there’s not much here for tourists but it does act as a good base for exploring the surrounding attractions like the Candelaria caves and the Cancuén ruins.

Around and closeby
The Candelaria caves are 10km west of town. The system is 18km long and some of the chambers are gigantic. Some of the caves have openings in their ceilings and it makes the whole thing very atmospheric when shafts of light dance over the glistening rocks and water.

Sightseeing
Cancuén is the site of a large Maya city, thought to have been in use some 1,300 years ago. Due to the large amount of jade, obsidian and pyrite, and the notable lack of religious icons, it is supposed that this city was used as a trading centre.

Getting there
There are regular buses from Cobán via Pajal or Chisec, and from the north there are buses from Sayaxché.
