Esquipulas is a town in the Guatemalan department of Chiquimula. The town is famous for the Basilica of Esquipulas, which houses the Shrine of the Black Christ. Every year thousands of pilgrims from the United States, Europe, Guatemala and other Central American countries flock to pay homage to the dark wooden image of the crucified Christ, the most revered Catholic shrine in the region.

Sightseeing
The Las Cuevas de las Minas are a set of caves about 10 minutes walk south of the Basilica, there are some thermal baths here that you can bathe in.

Getting there
There is a bus service every 30 minutes between Guatemala City and Esquipulas. There are also regular minibuses to the borders of El Salvador and Honduras. The office is on the main road at Calle 11 and Avenida 1.
