Champerico is the country’s third biggest port, although it doesn’t look like it’s a thriving trade town. This small town is located by a beach and was founded over 130 years ago. Back in those days it was very famous due to the coffee export business and the railway, which connected it to Quetzaltenango. But eventually the town lost much of its sheen and since then has become extremely insignificant and ordinary. Even Adous Huxley called this place boring. There are no trade movements and the only trading you’ll probably see will be the fishermen going about their business.

Sightseeing
The only attraction here is the beach, which has nothing much to offer except for its size which impresses people. The place is known for a dangerous undertow.

Getting there
The town gets slightly busier during weekends, so if you want to go make sure you go then. You can get here easily by buses, to and from Retalhuleu, which run every ten minutes.
